Update: Charges laid in two jewellery store robberies

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, May 9, 2017   8:45am  

(Ottawa) — The Ottawa Police Service Robbery Unit continues to investigate, but has charged one suspect in relation to these two jewellery store robberies.  

Derick DESIR, 19 of Ottawa, is charged with the following offences in connection to the two robberies: 

  • Two (2) counts of robbery
  • Two (2) counts of conspiracy
  • Two (2) counts of wearing a disguise 
  • Two (2) counts of possession of a weapon
  • One count of assault with a weapon 

DESIR was already in custody on an unrelated matter. He will appear in court next on May 10, 2017. 

Several suspects still remain at large in connection to these investigations.   

S/Sgt. Haarbosch, of the Robbery Unit, stated “I would encourage people to revisit the images and video that were previously released, in light of the charges laid, and contact Police with any information about the person charged, or the suspects that still remain at large.”

New images & video released in ongoing investigation for two jewellery store robberies

(Ottawa) — The Ottawa Police Service Robbery Unit continues to investigate two jewellery store robberies and is releasing images of a person of interest that purchased two large hammers, believed to have been used in the January 4, 2016 robbery. The purchase was made at a south Ottawa hardware store the preceding day. 

The subject is described as being a male with light brown complexion, 18-25 years of age, slim build with dark puffy hair. At the time he wore a black puffy vest, a grey long-sleeved sweatshirt, grey sweatpants, and tan-coloured boots.  

The video, which was first released on January 21, 2016 with images of the suspects, is being reissued today with the added clip, and still image, of the person of interest investigators wish to identify.

Police investigation continues in two jewellery store robberies 

(Ottawa) — The Ottawa Police Service Robbery Unit continues to investigate two recent jewellery store robberies and is seeking public assistance to identify the suspects responsible. 

Today, investigators are releasing a video from the incident at Carlingwood Mall as well as still images from both Carlingwood Mall and Billings Bridge. In both cases, the suspects are described as being black males, 18-25 years old.  

Robbery Unit Mike S/Sgt. Haarbosch stated: “The images may be of sufficient quality for someone who knows the suspects personally to identify them.”

Investigation concerning two jewellery store robberies  

(Ottawa) — The Ottawa Police Service Robbery Unit is investigating two recent jewellery store robberies and is seeking the public's assistance in identifying the suspects responsible. 

On December 23, 2015, at approximately 6:20pm, three (3) masked suspects entered a jewellery store at the Carlingwood Mall. The suspects proceeded to smash a number of display cases and fled the premises with an undisclosed quantity of varying jewellery. There were no injuries. 

On January 4, 2016, at approximately 8:30 pm, four (4) masked suspects entered a jewellery store at Billing Bridge Plaza. One of the suspects carried a large “hammer” and began to break a number of display cases. The remaining suspects grabbed varying jewellery from the cases and the group fled into the mall. There were no injuries. 

The suspects are described as black males, ages believed to be 18-22 years (no pictures available at this time). 

At this time investigators are operating on the premise that the two robberies are related. 

The Robbery Unit is recommending extra vigilance as the investigations progress, and is asking jewellery store employees to report any suspicious activity or persons.
