(Ottawa) – Ottawa Police Patrol officers safely ended two situations this week involving armed and agitated individuals.
At about 1:00 a.m. this morning, a woman called 911 saying her heavily intoxicated son had kicked in the front door of her south end residence. He then assaulted another woman in the residence and dragged her in the hallway. Officers arrived on scene and were confronted by the suspect who locked himself inside a bedroom armed with two large kitchen cleavers.
The man became further agitated, smashing windows inside the locked bedroom. When he came out of the bedroom with both knives the officers deployed a Conducted Energy Weapon and were able to apprehend him without further incident.
A 39-year-old man has been arrested and remains in custody.
Ottawa Paramedic Service treated the victims at scene and the Ottawa Police Victim Crisis Unit is also providing necessary support.
Constable de-escalates dangerous situation involving distraught, armed man
In another call earlier on Tuesday night another Ottawa Police Constable was able to de-escalate a mental health call involving an armed man.
The Constable was dispatched to a west end residence after 911 received a call about a stabbed man.
Once on scene, the officer found himself in a face-to-face confrontation with a man armed with a knife. The man had a self-inflicted wound.
The officer drew his firearm and instructed the man to drop the knife, but the man refused. At one point the man used large sweeping gestures with his hand and told the Constable to “Do it, Do it.” The male also pointed the knife at the officer and started growling at him.
As trained, the Officer continued to talk to the man in an attempt to deescalate the incident.
Eventually, the man complied, dropping the knife and was apprehended without further incident and taken to hospital.
“Our Members come upon dangerous and difficult circumstances every day and often put themselves in harm’s way,” said Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau. “These are just two examples of how training and experience contributes to keeping our community safe.”
