Handgun seized following arrest on Penfield Drive

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, December 3, 2018     1:05pm

(Ottawa) – Frontline officers attended the 1-100 block of Beaverbrook Lane on Saturday December 1st at 10:54am for a complaint of a male carrying a handgun. The complainant gave a good description of the male suspect. 

Officers flooded the area but the male had fled prior to police arrival. At 12:00pm, a caller gave the same description of a male trying to hide behind a dumpster in the 200 block of Penfield Drive. Officers arrested this male and also seized a handgun from his person. 

Hassan MAHAD, 24 year old of Ottawa, is charged by West Criminal Investigations with:

  • Possession of a firearm without a licence
  • Carry a concealed weapon
  • Possession of a weapon dangerous
  • Careless storage
  • Possession of a restricted weapon
  • Possession of a restricted firearm without a licence
  • Unlicensed person possession of prohibited ammunition without a licence
  • Possession of a loaded regulated firearm
  • Attempted breaking and entering into a dwelling house
  • Criminal harassment
  • Possession of proceeds of crime under $5000
  • Possession of schedule I substance for trafficking 

MAHAD attended show cause court hearing on December 2, 2018. 

“The Ottawa Police wants to highlight that assistance from the public, by proactively calling us with suspicious behaviour, was crucial and resulted in MAHAD being located and arrested, and a firearm removed from our streets,” said Insp. Tim Hodgins, Criminal Investigations.
