FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, June 13, 2018 1:10 pm
(Ottawa)— Summer weather means there is an increase in road construction, as well as different types of road users like cyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians out on our local streets.
The Ottawa Police Service (OPS), along with Safer Roads Ottawa, wants to remind drivers that, by law, cyclists can take the full lane when a vehicle is unable to pass without leaving at least one (1) metre of space between the car and the cyclist.
“Cyclists can take the whole lane when traffic signs stipulate single file for both cyclists and cars,” said Cst. Will Barlow, an officer with the OPS bike unit. “Everyone should take extra care in construction zones as there may be extra hazards present for motorists, cyclists and workers. Slow down, leave space and plan for enough time to reach your destination.” (watch the video).
All road users are reminded to stay alert and help keep our roads safe. Police will be doing enforcement on a street near you this summer.
