FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, May 30, 2019 10:55am
(Ottawa) –On Wednesday May 29 2019, the Ottawa Police Traffic Services Unit, along with Ontario Ministry of Transportation officers, conducted a Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Blitz in the west end of Ottawa where 44 Level 1 inspections were conducted and another 5 inspections were conducted on lighter duty trucks.
Twelve (12) vehicles were taken “out of service” for improper tires, leaking brakes, or cargo security issues, to name a few. These vehicles were not able to continue until the repairs were made or issues rectified.
A total of fifty two (52) charges were laid between OPS and MTO, including insecure load, improper tires, improper class of driver’s licence, and lack of pre-trip inspection, and driving while suspended, to name a few.
“Drivers of commercial motor vehicles are required, by law, to complete daily inspection reports to ensure their vehicles are in proper working condition and free of any defects BEFORE hitting the road. We are seeing many drivers who fail take the time to conduct an inspection or are simply unaware that one is required. This continues to be a concern” says Cst. Phil Kane.
“Vehicle safety and proper driver behaviour will help keep our roads safe for ALL road users.”
“We will continue these enforcement initiatives throughout the year.”
