(Ottawa)—The media are invited to attend a reading day at Robert E. Wilson Public School held by the Ottawa Police in support of the OttawaReads program, part of the Ottawa Network for Education (ONFE).
DATE: Thursday, June 20, 2019
TIME: 9:45 – 10:30 am
LOCATION: 373 McArthur Ave., Ottawa
The event is being held to promote reading, a fundamental requirement in young students’ education and one on one reading is an essential step in developing strong literacy in our community. The OttawaReads program exposes reading kids who may not have the opportunity to do so at home or who struggle to read, helping them see the fun in reading for pleasure.
“We’ve been a reading partner with OttawaReads since 2010,” Interim Chief Steve Bell said, “and we recognize the important link between illiteracy and crime in our communities.”
The event draws attention to the need for more corporate sponsors and volunteers to OttawaReads program, to demonstrate the importance of reading, especially for young children. Robert E. Wilson is just one of the schools waiting for regular reading partners.
“We reached out to OPS and we’re so excited to have them visit,” said Lyndsey Jones, organizer of the event and a Grade 4/5 teacher at R.E. Wilson. “We’re hoping this event encourages people to volunteer with the program, as we would love more full-time reading partners for our students.”
