FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, September 17, 2019 3:10pm
(Ottawa) — Today, the Ottawa Police Service Elder Abuse Unit arrested and charged an Ottawa man with Mischief offences following an investigation into allegations of elder abuse at a long-term care (LTC) facility in the 100 block of Aird Place in Ottawa.
Kevin MONTERO, 48 years old, of Ottawa was charged with:
- Mischief per 430 (1) (d) CC
- Mischief to Data per 430 (5) CC
A police investigation was commenced by the Elder Abuse Unit on May 16th, 2019 in response to a complaint received that day from the facility that a registered practical nurse was not providing medications to residents.
An extensive collaborative investigation was undertaken in conjunction with the Coroner’s Office.
Based on the facility’s allegations that this practice may have happened on an ad hoc basis, the investigation examined a one-year period starting May 16, 2018.
The investigation concluded that there was no correlation between the registered practical nurse’s actions and any deaths that transpired at the long-term care facility during that period.
The charges of Mischief laid today by police stem from an incident that occurred on May 16, 2019 where MONTERO did not provide prescribed medication(s), vitamins and supplements to at least 25 residents.
“Although these actions are disturbing, there is no evidence suggesting any other employee was involved in this incident,” said Insp. Tim Hodgins, with the Criminal Investigations Directorate. “Furthermore, there was no evidence that any resident suffered bodily harm as a result of not receiving their medications.”
MONTERO is scheduled to appear in court today.
