FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, March 8, 2016     10:55 am

(Ottawa)— The Ottawa Police Organized Fraud Unit is investigating a scheme where subjects are using stolen credit card information to make online purchases.

A purchase is made online by a subject, then the delivery shipped to the actual cardholder’s address. The subject then attempts to intercept the delivery person or recover the delivery from the homeowner afterwards. The products purchased in this scheme were mostly laptop computers.

Ottawa residents are asked to be aware of this scam should they receive any unexpected deliveries of merchandise. Residents are also asked to be on the lookout for suspicious persons sitting in cars in residential neighbourhoods for long periods of time who approach delivery truck drivers. Any suspicious person or vehicle in your neighbourhood should be reported to police.

Anyone who believes that they may have been a victim of this type of fraud can report it to Ottawa Police at 613-236-1222, ext. 7300. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 or downloading the Ottawa Police app.
