We’ve all been there, that feeling that if just one more thing happens, it will be too much to handle.

Ottawa resident Gail L. was still in shock over the recent passing of her husband Ron after 41 years of marriage, so it’s understandable her resilience was already stretched to the limit when she was in a collision on February 5, 2020.

“It was minor,” she said, “but I had forgotten my cell phone at home and couldn’t call for help.  I sat in my car, crying uncontrollably and feeling overly emotional.”

Minor collisions don’t require a police officer to attend, so it was a patrol officer who just happened to be going by who saw Gail’s hazard lights on and stopped to check on her.

The 17 year veteran of the OPS offered to help.

“I was too upset to give her the phone number of a friend,” said Gail, “so I told her the street they were on and she found them. And then when my CAA card didn’t work, she made arrangements for a tow for me.”

The officer waited with Gail until friends arrived.

But the officer continued to think about Gail after her shift. “Some people touch you,” she said. “You know you were there for a reason at a time when they are feeling their worst. It makes you want to do anything you can to make it better and maybe even put a smile on their face.”

To Gail’s surprise, the officer stopped by her house the next day to check on her, with soup and a lasagna in hand.

“How amazing is that?” asked Gail. “This officer didn’t make me feel weak or stupid but treated me with kindness and respect. I am so extremely grateful. Of all the times I needed someone, this was it.”

This kindness helped Gail turn a corner with her grief. “Ron told me I would be alright and that I was strong. Because of this officer’s actions, I feel stronger and more secure now. I think it’s extremely important for others to know everything is not bad and horrible around us.”

Gail was able to share a story about the love of her life with a smile. “When Ron asked me to marry him, I immediately said ‘yes’ and asked him when. He said, ‘when do you want to get married?’ I always liked May and he agreed. But a few months later, he didn’t want to wait that long. ‘Let’s get married in January,’ he said. But we couldn’t, because the invitations were already printed.”

As a young bride, Gail wondered what one does with the same person for the rest of their lives. “Now I look back at our marriage and think, 41 ½ years was not near long enough.”

Although she misses him desperately, she says, “I’m encouraged I’ll get through this difficult time thanks to angels like this officer who helped me.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, February 24, 2020        3:50pm

(Ottawa) – Ottawa Police Service (OPS) Marine Dive Trail (MDT) officers charged a snowmobile operator with impaired driving during a RIDE program Saturday evening.

Between 9 pm February 22 and 1 am February 23, officers set up at two trailhead locations: Dwyer Hill and Fernbank Roads and Roger Stevens Drive and Fourth Line Road.

Between the two checkpoints, 95 vehicles were stopped, resulting in seven roadside demands and one Standard Field Sobriety Test.

Two snowmobile operators attempted to evade the checkpoint, however, they were stopped and one operator was charged with impaired driving.

“Snowmobiling is a fun winter activity, but sadly, a lot of fatalities on snowmobiles involve impairment by alcohol or drugs and they are entirely preventable,” said Staff Sergeant Marc-Andre Sheehy, head of the OPS MDT. “Everyone has the right to safely enjoy the trails, which is why we’re out here.”

Impaired snowmobile operation carries the same penalty as driving a car or boat impaired.

“Don’t risk your licence, your safety and that of others,” said S/Sgt. Sheehy.

RIDEs on trailheads will continue throughout the snowmobiling season.

Sub-ice training gives Ottawa Police dive team elite water rescue skills

$

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) Marine Dive Trail (MDT) Unit got a unique opportunity to do some sub-ice diving in Quebec City earlier this month.

They were one of two police organizations invited to the three-day training session organized by the Experimental Diving Underwater Group.

“We were lucky to get this experience to bring back to our community.” said OPS MDT member, Cst. Shyldon Safruk, who was previously a navy diver.  “They are the best of the best of the military dive world.” In total, eight members of the OPS MDT had the chance not only to dive under ice, but also in darkness, in zero-visibility exercises.

“Being under the ice can be intimidating, but the darkness brings it to a new level,” said Cst. Safruk. “The only light is from the flashlights we are carrying.”

In freezing water conditions, dives only last about 20 – 30 minutes. That’s because even with the best equipment, a human can’t handle much more than that. Fingers and toes feel the cold immediately. Fortunately, there are warming tents for the officers when they get out of the freezing water.

Using a helicopter cockpit which was sunk in a basin of the St. Lawrence specifically for the training, the MDT team practiced surveying and recovery.

Fortunately, water rescues are rare in Ottawa, but it’s good to be prepared.

Cst. Safruk has been with the MDT Unit for 10 years and was involved in an underwater recovery several years ago after a vehicle went into the icy water in Fitzroy Harbour. “It was the coldest I have ever been in my life,” he said.

March is Fraud Prevention Month

$

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, March 2, 2020   2 pm

(Ottawa) – Each year, Canadians lose millions of dollars to fraud.  Educating yourself on common scams is the easiest way to prevent being a victim.

“It’s hard to keep up with all the different kinds of scams,” said Sergeant Jamie Ritchie from the Ottawa Police Service Fraud Unit. “But there are steps you can take to protect yourself, regardless of the specific scenario.

  • If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. “Don’t fall for high pressure sales tactics that don’t allow you to have time to think over a decision or require you to provide personal, banking or credit card information without checking into the offer further,” advised Sgt. Ritchie.
  • If you didn’t request a service, don’t accept unsolicited offers by phone or on your door step. “Do your research first to ensure you are dealing with a reputable company.”
  • Do your due diligence. Check companies with the Better Business Bureau, ask for references and visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre to find out about the latest scams and where they are active. “Get quotes in writing,” adds Sgt. Ritchie.
  • No government agency or legitimate business will ask you to purchase gift cards or bitcoin in order to settle an account.
  • Be careful where you share your personal information and how much information you share on social media. “Identity theft is prevalent and can lead to false credit applications in your name,” says Sgt. Ritchie.

Common scams like home improvement scams, identity theft, mass marketing scams, elder fraud and on-line sales and tips to help you protect yourself, will be profiled during Fraud Prevention Month. Follow us on twitter @FraudOttawa, where we will be hosting a live Q&A session every Thursday from 11 am to 1 pm.

As well, more fraud prevention tips are available on our website.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, March 2, 2020  3:30 pm

(Ottawa) – Marine Dive Trail (MDT) officers were out on the trails again this weekend, focusing on impaired drivers.

At a RIDE checkpoint on the trailhead at South-North Gower/Richmond, a total of 29 vehicles were stopped on Friday night. While there were no charges laid, police encountered two snowmobile operators who tried to evade police by avoiding the checkpoint.

“The laws regarding impairment and snowmobiling are the same as operating a car or a boat,” said OPS MDT Acting Sergeant Walter Lushman. “We conduct this type of enforcement to ensure drivers are being responsible, for everyone’s safety.”

Many fatalities on snowmobile trails involve alcohol.

Officers were in Cumberland, Sarsfield and Vars on Saturday and conducted 70 stops to check for impaired drivers.

On Sunday, they patrolled Fitzroy, Carp and Dunrobin, which resulted in 38 stops.

“The trails were busy this weekend, which demonstrates exactly why impaired driving puts all trail users at risk,” said A/Sgt. Lushman.  “Snowmobiling is fun, but enjoy this activity responsibly. Everyone has the right to safely enjoy the trails.”

Impaired snowmobile operation carries the same penalty as driving a car or boat impaired.
