(Ottawa)–Frontline officers approached a suspicious vehicle in the 300 block of Rideau Street in the early morning hours of May 15th and attempted to speak with the driver.
In the course of the investigation, the two men aboard the vehicle attempted to flee from officers, striking police vehicles with their own vehicle. The two men then fled on foot and were both arrested after a short foot pursuit.
Seized items included a fully loaded firearm with magazine, a second fully loaded extended magazine, a large quantity of cocaine intended for trafficking, a large quantity of purple Fentanyl intended for trafficking, oxycodone pills, hydrocodone liquid, and Canadian currency.
The Guns and Gangs Unit’s follow-up investigation resulted in charges against Yves NIYONZIMA, 25 years old and Jamal OMAR 28 years old, both of Ottawa, as follows:
- Possession of Property obtained by crime
- Obstruct Peace Officer
- Pointing a firearm x 3
- Possession of a weapon x3
- Carrying a concealed weapon x 3
- Possession of an unregistered restricted weapon
- Possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle x3
- Importing or delivering prohibited weapon or parts x3
- Possession of a firearm, prohibited or restricted weapon obtained by crime x3
- Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the purpose of trafficking x3
- Possession of a scheduled substance
NIYONZIMA is also charged with:
- Assault with intent to resist arrest
- Possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order x3
Both were scheduled to appear in court today.
