(Ottawa) – In late June, the Ottawa Police Service conducted a week long zero tolerance initiative in the Downtown core focusing on Rideau and George Streets between Sussex and Cumberland and it included the Waller Mall.
The Ottawa Police Central Neighbourhood Officers (NHO) along with the Demo Team were assisted by OC Transpo Special Constables during this initiative.
As a result, 78 criminal charges were laid, including 17 drug related charges. A total of 143 Provincial Offence Notices (PON) were issued in relation to offences under the Liquor License Act, Trespass to Property Act, the Safe Streets Act and the Highway Traffic Act. Four Provincial offence Part 3 summonses were issued to repeat offenders.
This initiative also led to the arrest of four people wanted on warrants.
“The results of this initiative are impressive and dealt with numerous concerns raised by residents, business owners, their employees and our officers working in the area,” said Staff Sergeant Sam Fawaz, Central District Directorate. “Officers received positive comments and thank you's from the public, local business owners and employees.”
“This initiative was the result of excellent work by the members of Central NHO and Demo Beats Unit and has set the tone for our Summer Lowertown Foot Patrol Initiative that commenced July 4th to continue to address these issues,” he added.
Both of these initiatives are part of our ongoing work with our communities to make our streets safer with an emphasis on having a high visibility of police presence, on foot, in the downtown core.
