(Ottawa)–Today, Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau and the Ottawa Police Services Board will host the 2015 Community Police Awards Ceremony at Ben Franklin Place. The awards being presented are as follows: Certificate of Valour, Certificate of Merit, Community Service and Thomas G. Flanagan, S.C. Scholarship Certificate.
The Certificate of Valour will be presented to the following 16 members of the community who, in an act of personal bravery or highly-meritorious service, provided assistance to another individual or member of the Ottawa Police Service:
- For her assistance in identifying and convicting a serial offender - Ms. Kristie Cyr
- For his assistance to an officer in need - Mr. Michael Pullen
- For her assistance in an attempted murder - Ms. Roberta Fraser
- For their assistance during an assault - Mr. Chayce Elliott and Mr. Robert Griffith
- For their assistance during a suicide attempt - Mr. Jason Deavy, Mr. Mohamad Moharam, Mr. Joel Ngandu, Mr. John Lloyd Spearman and Mr. Theodore Tshiaba
- For their assistance to a possible drowning victim - Mr. Serguei Ponomarenko and Mr. Andrey Vozzhov
- For his assistance to a possible drowning victim - Mr. Jesse Haw
- For his assistance to an officer in need - Mr. Robert Grenier
- For their assistance during a suicide attempt - Ms. Jennifer Armstrong and Mr. Claude Laprade
The Certificate of Merit will be presented to the following eight members of the community who, in an act of unselfishness, provided assistance or demonstrated a unique concern for the safety and well-being of another individual or the community:
- For her assistance in a Human Trafficking conviction - Ms. Shelley Gilbert
- For his assistance during an assault - Mr. Evan Ruszanak
- For his assistance to an officer in need - Mr. Hector Morales-Pena
- For his assistance to a possible drowning victim - Mr. Thomas Barone
- For their assistance to an individual in medical distress - Ms. Tiffany Hardiman and Mr. Brayden Messier
- For his assistance in identifying a break and enter suspect - Mr. David Lang
- For his assistance during a bank robbery - Mr. Hugh Kellam
The Community Service Award will be awarded to the following three members of the public who have made a significant contribution to the Service, and demonstrated continued excellence in their dedication to the Ottawa Police Service:
- For their volunteer efforts with the OPS gala fundraiser - Mr. Andy Lonie and Mr. Michael Sangster
- For his volunteer efforts with NCR Crime Stoppers - Mr. Richard McMullen
The Thomas G. Flanagan, S.C. Scholarship Certificate will also be presented toMs. Latoya Chevannes, a member of the community who has expressed an interest in a policing career.
Since 1993, this award has been presented annually to Aboriginal or racialized women to continue their post-secondary education in a law-related field. The winner was selected by a committee comprised of a representative of the Police Services Board, Executive Command, a community representative, and the Diversity and Race Relations Section. The selection was based on the resume outlining extensive volunteer work and an essay outlining knowledge of the Ottawa Police Service’s community policing philosophy.
